This Weekend

Brandon was invited to go dirt biking with some guys from our home ward. They were leaving at four in the morning Saturday. I decided to pick up a trip at work to earn a little extra money. The type of trip is called a stand up. They call it a stand up because techincally they don't have to let you sleep. I had to be in LA at 10:00 pm. We arrived in Bakersfield at 11:30 pm. We had to leave the next morning at 6:45 am. When we arrived in the lobby of the hotel that morning, our shuttle driver wasn't there. I spoke with the receptionist. She assured me that he would be there shortly. After several minutes the shuttle driver still had not arrived. I talked to her again. This time she told us that the shuttle driver was still unloading bags from a big tour bus but that she had called a taxi for us. Do these people not realize we have a schedule to keep?! The taxi driver pulled in and was taking his sweet time. We finally got on the road and then the questioning from the cab driver started. He made some comment about me being the captain. Then he asked how long I've been a captain. I told him about a year. Then he asked how long I've been flying. I told him he was asking a lot of hard questions first thing in the morning. He told me he was just asking because "You don't look any older than 19!" I told him I would be thirty this year. He said if he saw me at the airport he would think like the old saying goes "It's not what you know but who you know." Really?! I should have told him that he was right. That I haven't had to do one day of training...that I just sit up there and file my nails. I assured him that I have had to go through all the same training as everyone else. What a funny man!

That afternoon I was able to go to lunch with my good friend Hiwot. We met at a Women in Aviation Conference several years ago in Reno. She lived in Daytona when I lived in Vero Beach, FL. So whenever I just had it I would go hang out with her. I haven't seen her in a couple years because she moved to Atlanta, GA and I moved to CA. She was flying in to CA to meet up with this guy she has been dating who is from London but interviewing for work in LA. I picked her up from the airport and then we went to eat at a little joint called the Big Belly Deli. We talked for a couple hours and then I took her back to the rental car place. What a blessing good friends are!

I finished off the night by attending a musical in Long Beach. Brandon didn't make it home in time so I went with my mother-in-law. Our dear family friend Rob Moffat was in the show. I was hoping to go to the show with Peggy and Parker Moffat but they dogged me. I called Rob Friday to see when the show ended. Saturday night was the last night. I missed Peg and Parker by one night. They went Thursday night. The show is called The All Night Strut. I have never heard of it before. Apparently it is a classy, sassy musical celebration of the 30's and 40's. To be honest I didn't recognize most of the songs. To give you an idea though it was songs like "It doesn't mean a thing (if it ain't got that swing)". Rob did an amazing job. He truly is one of the most musically talented people I know. The pianist was crazy good too. Basically it was Rob (who is a tenor), one soprano, one alto, and one baritone. The only instruments they had were a piano, a bass, and drums. I am glad that we could go and support Rob.

You know you could easily pass for a 16 yr old! Whatever though, that cab driver doesn't know what he's talking about, we all know you worked hard to get where you are now.
